The risk of Asbestos
Asbestos is not always visible, and materials that appear harmless may contain asbestos fibres. When these materials are damaged, disturbed, or deteriorate over time, they can release asbestos fibres into the air. Without proper asbestos testing, exposure risks can go unrecognised—particularly during renovation, demolition, or maintenance works.

Exposure to airborne asbestos fibres is associated with serious diseases, including:
-
Asbestosis (lung scarring)
-
Lung cancer
-
Mesothelioma

For this reason it is crucial that workplaces understand and manage risks concerning asbestos containing materials from a moral and a legal standpoint.
Asbestos and WHS Law
Under NSW Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must identify, assess, and control risks associated with asbestos and other hazardous materials in the workplace.

PCBUs are required to maintain an up-to-date asbestos register and management plan, implement appropriate control measures, and provide information, training, and supervision to workers.
Periodic updating (<5 every years) of asbestos registers and management plans supports ongoing risk management, compliance, and the best-practice protection of worker health, ensuring exposure to hazardous airborne fibres is minimised so far as is reasonably practicable.

Our workplace asbestos testing services support:
-
Identification of asbestos-containing materials
-
Development or update of asbestos registers
-
Compliance with WHS and Safe Work Australia requirements
-
Risk assessments prior to refurbishment or demolition
Other Hazardous Building Materials
SafeSphere Consulting also specialise in the identification, documentation and management of other Hazardous Building Materials, including:

-
Lead-based paint – Lead-based paint must be managed with specific controls to prevent exposure to dust or fumes.
-
Synthetic Mineral Fibres (SMF) – Includes glass wool and ceramic fibres, if disturbed can release airborne fibres that must be risk assessed and controlled.
-
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) – Found in older electrical systems and sealants, are hazardous chemicals; exposure can cause chronic health effects.
-
CCA treated timber – Cutting or sanding releases toxic wood dust.
-
Mercury-containing devices – Present in some lighting and switches. Breakage can release vapour requiring immediate containment and control.
These potentially harmful materials must be identified, documented and managed in the workplace to control risk.
