Workplace Noise Assessments

Workplace Noise Assessments

SafeSphere Consulting offers specialist Noise monitoring services and audiometric testing to help workplaces manage their noise risks. An end to end solution of services are offered.

1.

Workplace Auditing - We assess your workplace to identify noise sources, high-risk tasks, and worker exposure. This includes plant, equipment, and operational processes contributing to elevated noise levels.

2.

Noise MonitoringWe conduct professional noise monitoring using calibrated sound level meters and noise dosimeters, including:

  • Personal noise dosimetry (worker exposure monitoring).

  • Area noise measurements and noise mapping.

  • Task-based noise assessments.

  • Determination of time-weighted average exposures and peak noise levels

3.

Reporting of Assessment - We provide clear interpretation of noise monitoring results in comparison to statutory limits, identify high-risk tasks and assess effectiveness of current risk controls.

4.

Recommendations on Noise Control - We provide practical yet comprehensive measures to address risk of workplace noise exposures using hierarchy of controls and verify success of control measures through monitoring and review.

The risk of Workplace Noise

Noise hazards can occur across many workplace tasks and environments. Activities such as operating machinery, using power tools, hammering, metal cutting, blasting, and other high-impact processes can generate harmful noise levels that may damage workers’ hearing if not properly understood and managed.

Potential exposure risks include:

  • Continuous loud noise from fixed or mobile plant

  • Impact or impulse noise from sudden bursts or collisions

  • High-frequency noise from cutting and grinding

  • Low-frequency noise from large engines or compressors

  • Combined exposures from multiple sources

Workplace Exposure Standards set the benchmark for acceptable noise exposure levels. Businesses must implement plans, procedures, and controls to protect workers’ hearing, and verify their effectiveness through ongoing noise monitoring and assessment.

Workplace Noise & WHS Law

Under Australian WHS legislation, PCBUs must manage risks associated with hazardous noise and ensure worker exposure does not exceed prescribed limits of 85 dB(A) 8-hour TWA and 140 dB(C) Peak exposure.

Our noise monitoring services help businesses:

  • Meet Workplace Exposure Standards for noise.

  • Identify and control hazardous noise sources.

  • Support hearing conservation programs

  • Provide defensible data for compliance and audits

Regulatory Codes of Practice advise workplace noise assessment is recommended when:

  • Workers must raise their voice to communicate at close distance

  • New plant or equipment is introduced

  • Changes occur in processes or workload

  • There is uncertainty regarding noise exposure levels

  • As part of routine WHS risk management

Audiometric Testing

In NSW audiometric testing is mandatory whenever workers are required to wear hearing protection due to noise exposure above statutory threshold values:

  • 85 dB(A) LAeq,8h, or

  • 140 dB(C) peak

Testing must be performed:

  • Within 3 months of starting work (baseline)

  • At least every 2 years thereafter

SafeSphere Consulting can provide onsite audiometric testing of your workers in accordance with AS/NZS 1269.4:2014 – Occupational noise management: Auditory assessment
